Philippines: Organisations unite against poverty
A wide range of groups have come together in the Philippines to challenge policy makers to meet the needs of the poor. The focus will be on those groups who bear the brunt of poverty including indigenous people, muslims and disaster survivors.
An initial calendar of events has already been put together, building on existing campaigns and linking up with the South-North issues targetted by GCAP globally.
Currently the calendar for 2005 includes:
March 15th: Women's March Against Poverty and Globalisation
April 24th-30th: Global Campaign for Education Week of Action
May 28th: International Women's Health Day - a Maternal Death Audit
July 1st: Mobilisation to press the G8 - Actions on food sovereignty, trade and poverty led by IRDF and Philnet-Rural Development Inc
July or August: Shadow Report by civil society on the status of the MDGs in the Philippines to be released.
September 10th: Mobilisation to press the UN Special Summit - Poverty, Social Exclusion Debt and Aid
October: Indigenous people's month
December: Mobilisation to press the WTO - Actions on trade led by Focus on the Global South
Further dates may be added in partnership with other movements.
The Philippines GCAP alliance, currently facilitated by Social Watch, already includes organisations from Action for Economic Reforms (AER), Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), Education Network (E-Net), Philippine Network on Rural Development Institutes, Inc. (PhilNet-RDI, Inc.), Integrated Rural Development Foundation (IRDF), Asian NGO Coalition for Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ANGOC), WomanHealth Philippines, Women's March against Poverty and Globalization, Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC), World Vision Development Foundation in the Philippines, and AnthroWatch along with many others. They are now working to develop stronger links with muslim groups, workers' organisations, environmentalists and legal advocates. The plan is combine advocacy and lobbying with street mobilisation and public education and to link local issues with global ones. The view is that by pooling resources and energies all those seeking to challenge poverty and injustice will be much stronger.
